According to experts, there are seven forms of migratory mourning affecting the mental health of immigrants in relevant and tangible ways. The stress levels experienced by immigrants are so intense that they may surpass the human capacity for adaptation. Although immigrants living in extreme situations are commonly associated with some mental disorders, research has found that many actually experience the Immigrant Syndrome with Chronic and Multiple Stress, also known as the Ulysses Syndrome, in reference to the Greek hero who suffered countless adversities and dangers in lands far from his loved ones.

In Spring 2024, CIRGH’s Immigrant Provider Action (IMPACT) Center hosted a lecture on the Ulysses Syndrome with Dr. Joseba Achotegui leading the session. In this video, Dr. Achotegui, who first described the Ulysses Syndrome in 2002, reviews the seven forms of migratory mourning, how it can manifest across three distinct phases, and how to use screening tools to assess community members for extreme migratory mourning.
