By refusing to share voter lists in machine-readable formats and withholding CCTV footage of polling stations, the EC claims it is safeguarding your data. But in reality, this makes it impossible for civil society or political parties to verify voter rolls and election processes.

Yes, privacy matters. But when it’s used as a shield against transparency and accountability, it risks eroding trust in our democracy. If we want free and fair elections, we need both: individual privacy AND institutional transparency.

At IFF, we’ve written to the EC calling for a serious discussion and a position paper on how to balance the two. Because protecting citizens should never come at the cost of protecting power.
