Lepoglava - Beautiful Continental Croatia

Lepoglava, or "Pretty head" in English, is located in an idyllic landscape, at the foot of Mount Ivanščica and near the river Bednja. Lepoglava, which is often forgotten or little is known about, is very important for Croatian art, culture, science, history, religion and developing tourism.

Baroque churches, which surround Lepoglava, painted with Ranger's frescoes (Gorica, Lepoglavska Purga, Kamenica, Višnjica) form a unique whole with the Lepoglava cultural and historical complex.

A special attraction of Lepoglava is the famous "Lepoglava lace", which in the late thirties was exported to the picky European market as a fashion detail of the then high fashion and awarded at world exhibitions.

Today, the production of lace is nurtured by the lace cooperative, and every year at the beginning of October, Lepoglava hosts an international lace festival. At the very edge of Lepoglava there is a geological natural monument "Gaveznica-Kameni Vrh", the only agate site in Croatia included in the European geological heritage.

The area of ​​Kameni vrh (Gaveznica) in Lepoglava is a fossil volcano that formed approximately 22 million years ago.

The reason why this volcano is called fossil is that soon after its origin it was covered with younger sediments, and it came to the surface again in the Upper Pliocene (approximately 2 million years ago).

Gaveznica is located about 400 meters south of the church of Sv. Marija in Lepoglava. In the past, the name Kameni vrh referred to a steep hill built of andesite, while Gaveznica was considered a lower area where the orchard of the Penitentiary in Lepoglava was located.
