NC500 E4: Walking around the ruins of Castle Sinclair Girnigoe near Wick in Caithness, a genuine piece of historical Scotland & one of the less visited castles in the Scottish Highlands.

After a thoroughly enjoyable visit to Wick (see my previous video) I headed a few miles north to a quiet cliff edge overlooking miles of spectacular scenery and a very important piece of Scottish history - Castle Sinclair Girnigoe.

If you’re looking for ideas or things to do on the North Coast 500 then I’d suggest considering this castle. As it’s just a few miles north of Wick it’s definitely worth a short diversion on the NC500 to see such a historic castle in the Scottish Highlands. It shouldn’t take more than a couple of hours to drive there, walk to the castle and explore the ruins unless of course you decide to join one of the walking paths and enjoy some of the nearby coastline whilst you’re there. It’s a beautiful area so worth thinking about if you have the time.

The 10 minute walk from the car park to the castle was spectacular in itself, especially at the point where I reached the top of a gentle hill and saw the castle and ocean rise up above the rolling countryside. As I approached Castle Sinclair Girnigoe I started to see its ruined state and precarious location in more detail than any photo can offer - and the important work the Clan Sinclair Trust are doing to preserve it from the elements and restore it for future generations.

Scotland has many castles but this is perhaps one of the less visited ones, although due to its proximity to the North Coast 500 tourism is beginning to increase and more people are visiting each year.

Castle Girnigoe was built for the 2nd Earl of Caithness in the 15th century and remained the only structure at that location until the early 17th century when a second castle - Castle Sinclair - was built. It was originally thought that these castles were two completely independent structures but it is now believed that Castle Sinclair is an extension of the first castle.

Join me as I take a walk down to the castle and cross an old drawbridge to explore inside. The sun is shining, the sky is blue and there's nobody else around - I've got the Castle all to myself!
