India’s First General Election — Quick Facts 🇮🇳🗳️
India became independent in 1947, and within two years the Election Commission of India was established.
Sukumar Sen became the first Chief Election Commissioner in March 1950.

India’s first General Election was held from 25 October 1951 to 21 February 1952 — a massive 4-month-long democratic exercise.

With a population of 36 crore, nearly 17 crore people were eligible to vote — making it the largest election in the world at that time.

The biggest challenge? Conducting elections in a country where 80% lived in villages and 85% of citizens were illiterate.

To manage this, the Election Commission deployed 3 lakh+ officials and produced 22 lakh steel ballot boxes.

To help illiterate voters, each candidate was given a unique election symbol — like bull, hand, lotus, sun etc.

The famous indelible ink (blue voting ink) was used for the first time in this election — and it was manufactured in England, not India.
