This video explains why I wrote Difficulties Associated with Articles of Religion.

The book examines the role of Articles of Religion within Particular Baptist churches, and the serious difficulties that can arise when confessional standards are misunderstood, misapplied, or elevated above the authority of Scripture.

Drawing on personal experience and historical reflection, the work considers major Baptist confessions, including:

the First London Baptist Confession (1646)

the Second London Baptist Confession (1689)

the Articles of the Bierton Particular Baptists (1831)

and the Gospel Standard Articles of Religion (1878)

While affirming the value of confessions, the book addresses the problems that emerge when Articles are treated as final arbiters of fellowship rather than as subordinate helps to biblical truth. Particular attention is given to the “Added Articles” of the Gospel Standard and the confusion, division, and exclusion that have followed from their use in practice.

This book also records my own experience within the Bierton Strict and Particular Baptist Church, the doctrinal tensions that arose, and the circumstances that eventually led to my secession. These matters were not abstract debates, but issues that affected church membership, communion, discipline, and conscience.

Difficulties Associated with Articles of Religion is not a call to abandon confessions.
It is a call for honesty, humility, and biblical clarity in their use — recognising that confessions are servants of Scripture, not its masters.

This video does not analyse the confessions in detail.
It explains why the book needed to be written at all, and why the wise and careful use of Articles of Religion matters deeply for the unity and health of the church.
