Sketching a Speed Boat in Gouache—Despite Wind, Rain, and Quicksand

James Gurney embarks on an artistic voyage with Jeanette, Smooth, and captain Frank on a 1966 Glastron Futura speed boat, destination Middle Ground Flats on the Hudson River. The goal is to paint the moored boat en plein air, but first he has to overcome rain, wind, quicksand, and an engine that won’t start.
