Matsumoto to Hakuba | Ep. 6 Enjoying my "Zero Day" while hiking the Northern Alps of Japan

After a few days up in the Northern Japanese Alps, it was finally time to take a shower and do some laundry before heading back to the trail. We call this a "zero day": no trail miles, a time in town to resupply food and do "chores". I'm so happy to share a little bit of the beauty of Matsumoto and all the amazing coffee shops there with you all! Having a good cup of coffee after a few days of hard hiking and backpacking is one of my favorite things to do :)

Amazing location, clean, great amenities, a super cool cafe downstairs-- highly recommend!


Hakuba accommodation: Penke Panke Lodge and Apartments

Originally booked a dorm room here as well, but they offered an upgrade to a private room with private bathroom for a very low cost. Pros: budget accommodation, free breakfast, cool staff. Cons: further from town than others, no AC during hot summer season (room gets VERY stuffy), not as clean as other places I've stayed in Japan


Train line to get from Matsumoto to Hakuba: Oito Line

- I recommend that you buy tickets at the station before you go through, they don't technically accept Pasmo etc (but I was able to get mine scanned in Hakuba one time, another time no).
