Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA's) vary in the validity of their results based on the method used. Correlational methods, such as the Antecedent-Behavior-Consequence recording method, only indicate that certain events may be "related" to behavior problems. Experimental manipulations of variables that occur before or after a behavior may show "causation" which is much more likely to yield accurate causes of behavior problems.

So, when its safe and practical, its suggested that clinicians manipulate the events before or after a behavior to be more certain as to what controls it than simply watching what happens before and after it.
