Former Goa PWD minister Churchill Alemao was arrested on Wednesday night in connection with the Louis Berger International Inc (LBI) bribery scam.

In a late night development, the crime branch officials arrested the former PWD minister allegedly for accepting bribe paid by LBI for awarding consultancy contract to the US-firm for water and sewerage project in 2010. The JICA project comes under PWD of which Alemao was the minister in-charge from 2007 till early 2012.

SP (Crime) Karthik Kashyap confirmed the arrest of Alemao. But officials declined to give details of how they effected his arrest. While some said that he was picked up from his Varca residence, others said that he was summoned to the crime branch office late evening and arrested there.
Kamat got some temporary relief as the special court adjourned the hearing for August 7 in connection with the anticipatory bail filed by the Margao MLA.

In a related development, the BJP, anticipating some trouble in the Goa assembly, discussed floor coordination. Sources said that they will finalise their strategies in the morning. Police patrolling has also been intensified, sources said.
