The story begins with a strafing high above the treeline of a lush green rainforest. Intercut is a series of images of Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a crippled veteran and former Marine. He wakes up in a giant spaceship bound for Pandora, a densely forested Earth-like moon orbiting Polyphemus, a giant blue Jupiter-like planet. He was one of many passengers to wake up on the way to Pandora after nearly six years of cryogenic sleep. He floated out of the sleeping cabin in zero gravity and was looked after by the crew. He opens his locker, which is marked SULLY T. Jack tells us he had a late twin brother — Tom, a scientist — who was meant to be involved in an advanced program overseen by corporate and military strategists to study Pandora's environment and inhabitants. Since Jack and his brother have perfectly matched genes, he has a unique opportunity: Take over his brother's contract with the corporate military unit and travel to a Pandora outpost light-years away. Acknowledging the concepts of "freedom" and "starting over", Jack agreed to the deal when his brother's body was cremated.

Back at the gates of hell, most of the remaining humans were sent back to Earth in a shuttle. Some Earthlings like Noam and Dr. However, Patel was invited to stay at Pandora.

Jack says goodbye in his final vlog, and we learn that he chose to transfer his consciousness to his avatar forever. In a ritual similar to Grace's, Jack passes through the Eye of Ava...and wakes up in his avatar, with Neytiri under his tutelage.
