To the Ikebana artist, the craft is much more than arranging flowers and ferns in a jar. God, Man and Earth – these are the three basic elements represented in the traditional Japanese art of flower arrangement, Ikebana. The plant representing God must face upwards, the one representing Man slants outwards and Earth is represented by those curving downward.

The Ohara School is only one part of the vast discipline of Ikebana. While Ikebana is a disciplined art form which was initially practised only by male members of the Japanese elite, it has crossed both cultural and geographical boundaries and has takers all over the world.

According to Ohara Master Masakazu Chiji, the art of Ikebana is continuously evolving. “Earlier it was just the Samurai men that did Ikebana which was considered a sacred practice but now it is open to everybody.”

This video was shot on 12th March, 2018, when Mr. Masakazu Chiji, Associate Professor in the Council of Professors, did an Ikebana demonstration at the India International Centre, New Delhi. The event was organized by the Delhi Chapter of Ohara School of Ikebna.

Like a classical musician who gets into the mood of a raaga he is espousing for the audience, Mr.Masakazu Chiji seemed to enter into the world of flowers himself, fully engrossed in his art.
