Two men from Japan were caught last month trying to smuggle 13 bobtail lizards out of Perth International Airport in Australia. Bobtails, also known as shingleback lizards or their scientific name, Tiliqua Rugosa, are native to Australia and can fetch a high price on the international resale market — as much as $10,000 a lizard. On July 29, 2019, the men were convicted and sentenced to jail time. Australian Border Force agents intercepted the two men, aged 51 and 28, as they were about to board separate flights, one to Kuala Lumpur and the other to Singapore. An X-ray of the 51-year-old’s checked-in suitcase revealed anomalies that, when opened, turned out to be large lizards. The younger man was the collector of the lizards and the older man his courier, court heard.
