India: EAM Jaishankar Targets Opposition Over Katchatheevu Row | Subscribe to Firstpost

India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has doubled down on PM Modi's charge that the largest opposition party, Congress, gave away the strategic Katchatheevu island to Sri Lanka. Jaishankar cited statements by Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi dismissing its importance. He quoted Nehru calling Katchatheevu a "little island" and "nuisance" he was willing to cede, while Gandhi termed it a "little rock." The 1974 Indo-Sri Lankan pact accepted it as Sri Lankan, followed by a 1976 deal restricting fishing rights. Jaishankar said 6,184 Indian fishermen have been detained and 1,175 vessels seized by Sri Lanka in 20 years due to the "indifference" of past PMs towards India's territory.
