In this video, James Conrad covers performing searches in Windows. There are a number of commands available for searching through all those files, folders, sub-folders, and sub-sub-sub-folders you've accumulated throughout the years. Learn them and navigate your files with speed and ease.

Keeping your digital files and folders straight is a Sisyphean task — it sometimes feels like the only time a naming convention is followed perfectly is with a blank hard drive.

But Windows does provide a number of powerful and versatile tools and extensions for searching through all the digital baggage you've saddled yourself with.

The first step — which can also find programs — is to press the Start button. Also called “the jewel” by Microsoft, no one else calls it that — but it does lead you to the quickest search option.

To search through a specific folder and its children, you can navigate to that folder in Microsoft Explorer and use the search functionality in the top-right. There, you can search by extension, file name, date, or more.

On top of that, there's the dir command with wildcards like *.*, question marks, or /s. And if all that fails, using good indexing can help find your needle in the haystack.
