Worm activity naturally increases nutrient availability for your plants. Earth worms offer many benefits like more stable soil structure which helps improve farm productivity.

Worms break down organic matter, like leaves and grass into things that plants can use. They burrow holes and make openings into the soil which helps get water and air in the ground. When they eat, they leave behind castings that are a very valuable type of fertilizer.

Earthworms eat by ingesting small particles of soil and passing them through their bodies. As the soil passes through the earthworm, the earthworm removes and processes microscopic organisms and nutrients.

Plowing breaks up the soil, allowing air and water to get to seeds and the roots of plants. Earthworms act like tiny plows aerating the soil when they live in a garden. As earthworms move through the soil of a garden, they make tunnels helping many different things in nature.

What exactly can kill earthworms? Currently, only one readily available insecticide is known to reduce and kill off earthworm populations. Sevin, a carbayl-based product, is intended to kill off grubs in a lawn, but has been found to reduce earthworm populations as well. When the insectiside is used at the recommended dosage amounts for grubs, it can be deadly to your worm population.

Charles Darwin stated "It may be doubted whether there are many other animals which have played so important a part in the history of the world, as have these lowly organised creatures."

Earthworm casts are digested material that earthworms excrete. Their digestion unlocks nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus, making them more available to plants. Earthworms may lack the charm or excitement of more familiar animals, but their contribution to our world is significant. These ‘lowly creatures’ play a vital part within the natural soil ecosystem.
