The Tejas M1 Alfa 4.5 (more commonly referred to as Tejas Mk1A) is an advanced variant of India’s indigenously developed 4.5 generation light combat aircraft (LCA). It builds on the initial Tejas Mk1 with over 40 upgrades, including a new avionics suite centered on the in-house developed Uttam Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar and an electronic warfare suite called the Angad. The Mk1A variant features improved survivability with an externally mounted self-protection jammer, in-flight refueling capability, and onboard oxygen generation system for better endurance.
The aircraft carries a variety of weaponry on nine hardpoints, including air-to-air missiles like Astra and ASRAAM, air-to-surface and anti-ship missiles, and laser-guided bombs. It maintains a lightweight delta wing design with fly-by-wire controls and uses advanced lightweight materials. The cockpit is upgraded for better pilot comfort and situational awareness, featuring multifunction displays, helmet-mounted sight, and a heads-up display.
Powered by a single General Electric GE 404 engine, the Tejas Mk1A has a maximum speed of Mach 1.6, with a service ceiling of 50,000 feet and a combat range of about 500 km on internal fuel. The Mk1A is designed for omni-role multirole missions with enhanced avionics and electronic warfare capabilities, aimed at strengthening India’s self-reliance in defense manufacturing with significant indigenous content exceeding 70%. It is expected to be produced at a rate of about 16 aircraft per year for the Indian Air Force .
