Lesley worked in #audiology from the 1970’s until she retired a few months ago. She was first employed with the Commonwealth Acoustic Laboratory as an audiometrist, completing her initial qualifications at RMIT as an Aural Rehabilitation Specialist. She worked at the Hear Service performing community hearing education and listening and lip-reading classes for clients with hearing conditions, as well as hearing device fittings. She also worked at Veterans Affairs for many years, testing hearing for pension assessments, and has been employed in private #hearingaid practices.
For the last 20 years, Lesley has owned her own successful hearing clinic and fitted hearing aids to the Mount Waverley community. Eleven years ago, Lesley experienced a sudden #hearingloss in her right ear. This left her with a profound, permanent, and severe sensorineural hearing loss. The #deafness has made her aware of how difficult it is to communicate in certain situations. With time, she has learned to use tactics to cope better in difficult listening environments and has shared these with her clients as well as encouraging and educating them to make the best use of available technology.
At Yarn Night, Lesley will talk about her personal experiences after having a sudden hearing loss and how this changed her approach to hearing aid fittings, enabling her to empathise more personally with her clients.
