BRIEF EDIT: To clarify, I understand that the Brazilian dictatorship ended before the release of this film, but I still stand by the suggestion that it serves as inspiration to the film's social commentary, as the production of the film - and early development stages - would begin at an earlier stage, when the dictatorship was still in place.

This week's video essay is a belated Christmas episode, focusing on Terry Gilliam's marvellous monument to bureaucratic corruption, Brazil! Simultaneously hilarious and harrowing, Brazil creates an endless nightmare for Sam Lowry that even daydreaming escapism can't provide true relief. A darkly Kafkaesque film that delves into the territory of unreliable storytelling, Brazil is a great alternative to traditional festive flicks.
