I'm not a big STRUCTURE guy when it comes to writing my first drafts. I like "writing into the dark", what I call "exploratory fiction." This means I am experiencing the story for the first time as I write the first draft.

Grisham and Child outline extensively, and that works for them, but King and Rushtie do it more like I do - so there's no arguing that it doesn't work. The key is just to be good at whichever one you prefer.
