Hi Everyone and welcome to Schloss Bandit.
For my major project this semester I decided to push my Fairytale narrative further by creating the key areas in my Rumpelstiltskin Locked room game. For those who haven’t read the narrative, essentially the Miller’s daughter, Rose, tells the king she can spin straw to gold, so he locks her up in his tower dungeon for the night to get her to prove it. The aim of the game is to find a way to either escape or to spin the straw to gold.
We'll start the tour in the tower room since this is where the majority of gameplay takes place. On the left here, we have our spinning wheel next to a pile of straw as well as a few pieces of gold straw on the floor scattered around. Next, we have a giant fireplace big enough to fit a human. Here we have the key mould, a bucket, a pan, and a candle. I pretty much just left them around the room so that they could be seen for the video since they are key aspects to the game idea. We have a window here with some curtains – the bar on the window is part of a Rapunzel reference which we’ll discuss more later. And finally a straw bed with a wooden frame and ragged old sheet right near the heavy wooden dungeon door. As we exit, you’ll see the guard’s stool though he’ll spend most of the night sleeping anyway.
As we head downstairs, you’ll notice we have torches lighting the way down the stone stairs while each level is lit with candles. The tower room was actually lit more by the torches than the fire especially since I turned the torch light right up in there so that players can see more clearly.
As we move through the hallway, we have some beautiful stained-glass windows on the ground and second floors. These big doors on the top few levels are fake, but as we reach the 2nd floor, you’ll find they’re actually open into the throne room. Here’s the 2nd floor balcony with the golden rails. Down here we have a golden throne inspired by Schwerin Castle in Germany. I spent a surprising amount of time researching German Castles for this project.
As we move down the red carpet we can head outside to the Garden. I’ve kept the garden quite simple as I ran out of time. Here we have a pine bench underneath a tall tree and a beautiful fountain that was surprisingly fun to make.
Finally, we have some beautiful bushes over here with blue flowers and red thorns which allowed me to include a reference to both Shrek and Rapunzel.
