Malaysia is running out of natural gas and could become a net liquefied natural gas (LNG) importer within 10 to 20 years.

Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli said natural gas reserves are declining fast, with only Sarawak maintaining a stable supply.

Despite being a major LNG exporter, Malaysia risks falling into import dependence if current consumption continues.

Natural gas will remain a key part of the energy mix through 2050, so the government plans to launch a National Gas Direction Plan.

Rafizi believes Malaysia’s location and existing assets give it a chance to lead as Asean shifts to being a net importer.
