The 33rd President of the United States, Harry S. Truman, was a model of decisiveness based on humility. Truman, who was raised on a farm in Missouri, never attended college but developed his intelligence by reading a great deal of biography and history. His leadership style at times of national crises was influenced by such discipline.

In 1918, while serving as an artillery captain in World War I, he led his unit through intense German shelling in the Vosges mountains. His calm leadership saved lives and earned lifelong allegiance. This fearlessness carried over into his administration, particularly his decision to drop atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, which ended World War II but is still debated. Truman later revealed he made the decision in just 15 minutes, reflecting his decisive nature.

In addition to creating the CIA and NATO, Truman's administration improved civil rights at home by desegregating the military through Executive Order 9981. After leaving office, Truman famously refused to monetize his fame, answering fan letters himself and living modestly in Independence, Missouri. He once joked that the White House was “a great white jail". He loves playing poker and drinking bourbon, often playing late-night games with aides. Yet he maintained the habit of walking two miles at 5:30 am daily, a practice from his army days.

His motto, “The buck stops here,” remains a reminder of accountability in public service.
