MetroTV, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s media adviser Aliasghar Shafieian said the government is taking steps to respond to protesters’ demands, while downplaying the scale of recent demonstrations in Tehran.

Speaking in an interview on Wednesday, Shafieian said President Pezeshkian had made promises during a meeting with trade guilds who raised objections, suggesting that changes to tax collection and budget reforms could help ease economic pressure.

He explained that collecting taxes differently, reducing them, or delaying implementation by a year could impact prices, along with proposed reforms in next year’s budget submitted to parliament.

Shafieian attributed the ongoing economic crisis and the depreciation of the Iranian rial to both external and internal factors, including Iran’s conflict with Israel since March 2024 and domestic challenges, particularly in the energy sector. He also acknowledged that a gap between the government and the public existed before the protests began.

According to the adviser, while recent protests were sparked by economic grievances and joined by various groups, they have not been widespread so far.

Tehran has seen several days of demonstrations this week, as merchants protested rising living costs and sharp fluctuations in the currency market, with the Iranian rial continuing to weaken against the US dollar.
