Of course, volatile times call for volatile markets. But historically things haven’t shaken out as badly as you might expect. Looking back as far as World War I, things were bad — in the short-ish term — with the Dow falling more than 30% and markets were closed for six months. After reopening, however, the Dow skyrocketed over 88% in 1915. So, when all was said and done, between 1914 and 1918 the stock market had gained over 43% — or roughly 8.7% annually.

The next time around, in World War II, the Dow jumped up 10% on the first day of trading after Hitler invaded Poland in 1939. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, stocks dipped 2.9% but those losses were recouped in about a month. From 1939 until the end of the war in 1945, altogether the Dow saw increases of more than 50% or what amounted to a little more than 8% per year. Still in the range of what we’d expect from the market in a normal year.
