A new Texas law requiring parental consent for student healthcare services has led to confusion among school nurses and parents. The law, part of Senate Bill 12, went into effect on September 1 and aims to strengthen parental rights in public education.

Jackie Martinez, a health science teacher and registered nurse serving as the district's nurse coordinator at Hamshire-Fannett ISD, said, "Emerging still treating children but still needs parental consent." Martinez noted that the requirement has caused hesitation among some school nurses. "When the bill came into play on September first, a lot of nurses across the state were second-guessing their ability," she said. "Here at Hamshire-Fannett we contact the parents immediately, and then we get consent over the phone; the TEA didn't release a lot of this...confusing."

Martinez explained that the legislation was intended to increase transparency and parental involvement, but varying interpretations have created challenges. "Just this morning, they released some new guidance on what is first aid and what they can do without parents' consent," she said.

To address the confusion, Hamshire-Fannett ISD is using social media to keep parents informed and provide consent forms. Martinez assured parents that the health and safety of students remain a priority. "All of them are on the form, but we have talked to a couple of different parents that have had some concerns, so we've asked them to let the campus nurses know, and we walked to it with them, and they have us," she said.

Parents who have not yet filled out a consent form for their child are encouraged to contact the school nurse or principal.
