Despite coming from a variety of campaigns and political backgrounds, the speakers and the audience all showed a remarkable unity of purpose: all want to save the NHS from accelerating privatization and from the cuts which have been disguised behind many highly misleading "NHS reorganisation plans". These plans, though couched in terms which are supposedly "local", collectively represent a concerted attack on the NHS at national level. All the speakers wanted to remain true to the spirit of compassion which created the NHS after World War 2, and to keep a structure for the NHS in which private profit has no significant place, certainly not to the detriment of the ordinary patients.
