Repairing the faulty touch sensor on a VW head unit.

Описание к видео Repairing the faulty touch sensor on a VW head unit.

I had the common problem with my VW van:
The head unit was registering erratic false touches at random. It looked possessed.
Channels constantly changing on the radio, etc. Completely unusable.

I couldn't find instructions online on how to fix these so made this little clip.
I hope it helps someone.

Note that i did not risk removing the old sensor. I just installed the replacement over the top of the broken one. It's only ~1-2mm thick.
It works fine like this.

It seems to be the same head unit in Volkswagen Transporters, Golfs, Passats and my California.
Some serial numbers from my unit:
da44877
mib std2 pq +/nav

There seem to be 2 part numbers for the replacement sensor:
TDO-WVGA0633F00039
and
TDO-WVGA0633F00045 .
I believe they are interchangeable.

This is the one i bought:

It took 3-4 weeks to arrive.

[EDIT]
I just saw a few other relevant clips in my YouTube feed of others fixing the same issue.

This link    • Multimídia Original VW MIB2... Defeit...   (Portuguese language) shows someone replacing the whole screen and touch sensor combined. I don't believe replacing the screen part is required but it might be useful if anyone is struggling disassembling the unit.

This link    • Volkswagen VW Discover 5C0035680D - D...   (Again Portuguese language) shows someone going further than i did and actually removing the touch sensor from the screen instead of just putting the new one over the top.
