What are the best salon policies to have when it comes to giving out a friends and family discount? How about when employees want to do other staff members’ hair? Today, I share the policies that have worked well for my partner salon business.

Having a nice place to give out haircuts to loved ones is a huge perk of working in a salon that shouldn’t be taken away from your staff. Doing someone’s hair at home is never awesome because nobody wants their hair done in a bathroom or a kitchen. I’ve tried it myself. It's not ideal.

So, how do you give your staff this perk AND make it beneficial not only for your staff but also for your salon business?

First, if they want to do haircuts for family members, allow them to do it in your salon for free. That’s one of those salon policies that should always be in place.

However, for things like chemical services in your salon business, a family discount of 50% can apply since they’re using products inside the salon. The staff member would also not receive commission because they're giving away their time.

In terms of staff members, allow them to do each others' hair but make that a bumpable service. That means that if a guest walks in, they take priority. They can also choose to do it on their off day, provided that there’s space available.

Lastly, friends should pay a regular rate. Period. Your real friends will be happy to pay full rate for your services.

Your salon policies surrounding friends and family discounts are important because you need to provide your staff with opportunities to give their services away without taking from the salon.
