They have dark beady eyes and a distinctive white marking above the pinkish bill. Males are larger than females.

Vocalisations:

Distribution:

White-fronted geese inhabit the Palearctic and Nearctic regions and migrate south for the winter.

Habitat:

During the breeding season, they occupy the arctic tundra near wetlands, rivers, and ponds. They spend winters in wetlands, lakes, marshes, and croplands, forming large flocks.

Diet:

Greater white-fronted geese eat mostly plant materials, including seeds, grains, fruit, leaves, roots, tubers, bark, and stems. They also eat invertebrates such as insects, worms, and snails.

They are social birds with strong family bonds that form during cooperative breeding. Winter flocks can reach up to 30,000 individuals.

Pairs are monogamous and remain together year after year. White-fronted geese are cooperative breeders. Females lay up to seven eggs, and incubation lasts around 27 days on average. The young remain with their parents for at least a year.

Global numbers of greater white-fronted geese are stable. These birds are protected by the Migratory Bird Act in the United States. The Greenland population took a sharp dive in the ‘70s, due to habitat loss, but has since recovered due to legislation active conservation measures.
