Although the thought of free electricity is is an incredible feeling, solar systems on homes may impact the sale. Sometimes positively and sometimes negatively. However, when the solar is leased, my experience has seen it to have a negative impact more often than not. This is due to the structure of the leases that often escalate the payment each year for 20 years or more creating a situation where the lease cost plus any need additional electric costs can exceed the cost that others are paying for electricity alone in similar size homes. This is not to say that solar is a bad idea but you should consult with an independent party such as a realtor that has experience with how these systems can impact home sales when you are ready to sell whether it is 5, 10 or 15 years down the road. Relying on the solar sales person's thoughts about the potential impact on your home sale is not recommended.
