Putin warns West after launching "new weapon" at Ukraine

President Putin denied claims from Kyiv that Russia had launched an intercontinental ballistic missile for the first time in combat on Thursday, instead saying the projectile was a new “medium-range missile tested in response to western aggression”.

In an apparent reference to Ukraine’s use of western-made long-range missiles to strike within Russia for the first time this week, Putin said that “in case of escalation we’ll respond symmetrically”.

In response to the firing of US-made Atacms missiles and Franco-British Storm Shadows into Russia’s border regions this week, Putin said that “such actions won’t influence the situation in Ukraine”. He added: “The conflict in Ukraine has acquired elements of a global character.”
