The Fire!

MC DAR has come out of retirement (again?!) to rap some motivational bars!
In all seriousness though, this one was a lot of fun, and also important for testing some other things with my new mixing tweaks. Most notably how some of my orchestral stuff meshed with the new changes.
So, during my hiatus earlier this year, I had some fun with RSPC3 and got Fight Night Champion running through it. I've always been a fan of the Fight Night series (also really loved the Ippo boxing games!), and I had an absolute blast finally getting to experience FNC after all this time. Never got to try it out back then when it released since I never had a PS3 or 360.
To be frank, I didn't really vibe much with the majority of the soundtrack (just not my genre), and all the guitar stuff was kind of hidden away in the entrance-theme section. However! I really loved every time "The Fire" would play in the menus. That, and its several variants throughout the story mode.
Speaking of the story mode, I was barely able to condense and cram everything into a super montage for the video!
As for sound, something I decided to try doing with my french-horns was running them through some distortion and rolling the mix knob back on the distortion plugin. It really adds a nice bit of grit to the french-horns!
Also quite happy with how my pianos and strings sat in the mix as always!
Now, for guitars. I had a lot of fun with the guitars. I got to really go nuts and noodle around, since the original didn't have any guitars (save for the trailer variant of this song). Speaking of, I took the trailer version's palm-muted bit and implemented it into the verse, as well as later at the end when the first rap comes back to tie everything full-circle. I even threw in a harmony part for this palm-muted bit, since I thought it sounded cool.
I had a lot of fun with the riff I came up with for the rhythm guitar during the chorus. Unfortunately, with all the epicness going on, the rhythm guitar served more as a texture. But that's alright, as I went nuts and into noodle-city for the leads. I just played whatever came to mind and just jammed out. I had two-hand tapping at a couple points, and also utilized my 'whammy-slap' technique for those quick downward-detunes (notably around 2:03).
I also had a lot of fun with the vocals. Doing the whole rap thing is always good fun whenever I get the opportunity for it. Speaking of which, I wound up modifying the original's first verse and incorporating it into the chorus. The verse that this version opens up with is actually the 2nd verse from the original version. As I mentioned, there's several versions of this track within FNC's OST. This particular version that I covered was the one labeled with "orchestral"/"remix" tagged on to it.
For the singing vocals, I kept it close to the original, just with a few variations and sustained notes here and there. I also decided to goof around a bit and do some falsetto, which by itself and raw, always sounds hilarious, but processed in the mix, it sounds great! So I made up my own little harmony bits for the falsetto that I added.
Anyways, I hope you all enjoy the cover! ~DAR
