HIGHLIGHTS FROM TODAY'S SHOW:
The Prime Minister authorized the declaration of a state of emergency earlier today, Monday 30th December 2024.
• In a statement coming from the Ministry of Communications, citizens were told that President Christine Kangaloo on the advice of the Prime Minister had declared the state of emergency being satisfied that the circumstances of Section 8(2)C of the constitution exist.
• The last time the country experienced an SOE to deal with the runaway crime situation in T&T was in August 2011.
Following news of the declaration of a State of Emergency, a joint media briefing was called by Minister of National Security Fitzgerald Hinds and Acting Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Stuart Young this morning.
The Administration of Justice (Indictable Proceedings) Act, 2011(as amended), referred to AJIPAA, was proclaimed on December 12, 2023 by Her Excellency Christine Carla Kangaloo.
• AJIPAA transforms the process for Indictable matters with the removal of Preliminary Enquiries at the District (formerly Magistrates’) Courts.
Following the issuance of the proclamation, here are several takeaways from the media conference this morning:
1. No curfew- Public gatherings, marches, and other group activities will not be affected.
2. Special powers of stop and search, arrests.
3. The State of Emergency targets people with unlawful firearms, ammunition and explosives- People found with these items will be detained with applications for bail suspended.
4. Arrests without warrants- Police officers will be able to arrest people on the suspicion of gang and criminal activity.
5. Powers of arrest for T&T Defence Force- Members of the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force will have powers of police officers, acting in accordance with the Chief of Defence Staff or any senior member of the TTDF.
6. A Tribunal will be set up- Acting Chief Justice, Justice Beraux, to establish a special Tribunal for matters during the State of Emergency.
THE MURDER TOLL CONTINUES TO RISE IN 2024 AS THIS COUNTRY HAS RECORDED A TOTAL OF EIGHT (8) MURDERS BETWEEN SATURDAY AND TODAY.
As the Minister of National Security and the Acting Attorney General were hosting a press conference regarding the declaration of a state of emergency this morning, Monday 30th December, 2024, a man was murdered in Morvant.
• The deceased identified only by his alias ‘Froggy’, was shot and killed outside his apartment at Building B, Paradise Heights.
The country has recorded its second quintuple murder for the year, after five (5) men were murdered in Laventille on Sunday 29th December 2024.
• The deceased have been identified as 37-year-old Cleon St. John, 35-year-old Derron Caliste, 39-year-old Kambon Omowale, 24-year-old Ryan Lessey all of Prizgar Lands and 45-year-old Gareth Smith of Thomasine Street in Laventille.
• 32-year-old Micah Caliste of Prizgar Lands Laventille was shot & wounded.
Police are suspecting that the quintuple killing on Sunday is linked to the fatal shooting of a man outside of the Besson Street police station on Saturday 28th December 2024.
• The deceased identified as 34-year-old Trevor Williams of Clifton Towers, East Dry River was shot and killed near the Besson Street Police Station.
• It is reported that Calvin Lee aka "Tyson", a known gang leader in the St. Paul Street area, the main target, had left the Besson Street Police Station where he had to report as part of his bail conditions when the deadly ambush happened.
