Lok Sabha Elections 2024
Why are political parties giving fewer tickets to Muslims Candidates?

Lok Sabha Elections
Muslims play a very important role in Indian politics. Opposition parties, however, blaming BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for ignoring Muslims as the BJP allocated merely one seat in the Lok Sabha elections 2024. On the contrary, major opposition parties too have not given enough tickets to Muslim candidates in this general elections. Well, In 2019, they fielded 115, but that number has dropped to just 78 at this time. Let's break it down!

Leading the pack in fielding Muslim candidates is the BSP, which has given tickets to 35 candidates, the highest among all parties. But do you know? Congress has seen a sharp decline in fielding Muslim candidates. They've gone from 34 in 2019 to just 19 in 2024.

So, why is this happening? What's causing these changes? Let me tell you, there are several factors at play here. For starters, Congress is contesting fewer seats in comparison to previous elections. In 2019, Congress contested 421 seats but in 2024, its seat count has come down to 328, to adjust with other alliance partners in INDIA bloc. But that's not all. The political strategies are shifting, and each party has its own game plan.

Do you know the BJP has fielded merely one Muslim candidate in the entire country, And their ally JD(U) too has added just one in Bihar! how shocking it is. Currently, the BJP also doesn’t have any Muslim MP. This has been consistent with their previous election strategies, wherein, they shied away from giving tickets to Muslim candidates.

Meanwhile, regional parties like TMC, SP, and RJD have also seen a decline in the number of Muslim candidates. The TMC is down to 10 from 17, and the SP, which had 14 in 2019, now has only 9.

Now let’s talk about the impact of this scenario.

So, fewer Muslim candidates mean less representation for a significant section of the population, which can affect the community's voice in Parliament. This could also give wrong impression of a diverse country like India on the global stage. Recently, Congress' senior leader Shashi Tharoor lashed out at the BJP and said, "In recent years, the experience of Muslims has not been good. This is happening for the first time in this country that no Muslim is an MP in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. No Muslim is a minister in the cabinet. This is a wrong thing that the BJP has done.” Well, the BJP too attacked the Congress for Muslim appeasement.

This blame game, however, doesn’t bring any positive change in the life of the largest minority community in India, unless an assimilative politics of taking all segments of society together begins.
