Using sonar and magnetometer technology, they combed the depths in a process they call “mowing the lawn,” searching for the tell-tale man-made shapes hidden beneath layers of sand and sea life. After failed attempts and painstaking research, their perseverance finally paid off on November 29 when the unmistakable outline of a ship appeared on their screens. The moment was emotional, with tears, hugs, and the joy of achieving something that only a tiny fraction of people in the world will ever experience — the discovery of a lost shipwreck.

Located 95 nautical miles off Esperance in a wild, untouched stretch of ocean, the Rodondo now rests undisturbed in a flourishing marine ecosystem. Too deep for divers, it was surveyed with a remote operated vehicle that revealed portholes, masts, and decks teeming with fish. For the team, the wreck is not a site of treasure hunting but of conservation and history, with all artefacts left in place and shared with the Western Australian Museum for research.
