October's first new arrival was the limited edition CD 'Anime invisibili' by the hyper-melodic instrumental Italians Aliante. The second was 'Steamdome' by Ola Kvernberg, the first of a three-album series of music classed as contemporary jazz, a descriptor that doesn't convey the breadth of Kvernberg's writing.
The Jack Lancaster-Robin Lumley interpretation of Prokofiev's 'Peter and the Wolf' LP replaces a copy I owned on cassette, sourced from classic-vinyl-records in Newport via eBay.
'Live at Danfest' was my way of making up for missing Zopp at the Crescendo festival in France.
I checked out Lorenzo's Records Wanted - the shop has been in Brockley for over two years - and bought 'Turn of the Cards' by Renaissance.
6 LPs came from Black Widow in Genoa: the new Alphataurus album '2084: Viaggio nel nulla', a warning of impending eco-disaster presented in a triple gatefold which links to their self-titled 70s debut; 'Stranger Skies', the most recent offering from Ellesmere, filled with gorgeous melodies; the three 'Books' by The Chronicles of Father Robin tell the tale of the eponymous protagonist, an invented mythology begun in 1993 by schoolfriends who would later form the cream of Norwegian prog bands. The result is a seamless vision and sonically everything you'd hope for from such musicians; and I had to buy a Melting Clock's 'Altrove' needs no introduction to ProgBlog readers, but I had to get myself a test pressing on vinyl!
The first download, Nick Fletcher's 'A Longing For Home' is the final part of a musical trilogy based upon philosophical, scientific and spiritual beliefs. There's lots of jazz-rock and some classical-influenced tunes, all brilliantly played by an outstanding ensemble.
The next download was CrowsVsRavens' third album 'Revised Reality', which is broad-spectrum prog-metal influenced by 80's prog-metal and metal bands where the group's core duo Rope Ganjee and Rich Grabowsky are aided by multiple guests.
I was asked to listen to a new single called ‘Two Ways’ by the chamber-prog project Place-Names but I also streamed band leader Samuel Bradley's EP-length release ‘In A Gallery, In A Grave’, an entirely instrumental, upbeat and jazzy mini-album which is at times reminiscent of National Health and Henry Cow.
Two downloads from Protos are featured. The band were active at the end of the 70s and recorded their first, well-received keyboard-dominated instrumental album in 1982 which was very popular in Japan. 'The Infinite Horizon' is a 2024 version of the debut 'One Day A New Horizon', completed just after the death of guitarist Stephen Anscombe in August this year, and 'The Noble Pauper’s Grave’ is from 2007. The music is highly melodic and boasts an impressive range of keyboards and if I had to choose, I’d say I preferred the more recent album which has a little more drama thanks to Anscombe’s narrations.
The last of the downloads is ‘Dreams From An Empty House’ by Imaginary Kings, a well-conceived, beautifully realised and evocative post-rock offering based on subtly evolving short phrases.
