The James Webb Space Telescope has captured infrared images of Fomalhaut's asteroid belt, which orbits the young star at 150 times the distance between the Earth and Sun. The images reveal a sharp inner edge and a fuzzy outer edge, possibly shaped by the presence of Fomalhaut b, a planet orbiting at 120 times the Earth-Sun distance, discovered by the Hubble Space Telescope in 2008. Webb's ability to study the belt's interaction with the star and planet could help explain the nature of Fomalhaut b. With more mass than our own asteroid belt and made up of rocky and icy bodies, the Fomalhaut belt could be key to understanding planet formation and evolution.
