When companies misuse AI or suffer data breaches, a quick apology doesn’t cut it anymore. Customers expect you to build trust before things go wrong – not repaired afterwards.

Take the lawyer who used ChatGPT to write a court brief that cited fake cases. He got a small fine and a warning, but the damage to credibility was far greater. Despite this horror stories, other lawyers have been caught doing the same thing.

Or Apple, which launched its credit card in 2019 to great fanfare, and customers discovered its AI gave men five times higher credit limits than women with similar financial profiles. They apologised and moved on, but customers now are far less forgiving.

Trust can’t be an afterthought. If you’re using AI, get it right upfront. When you lose your customer's trust, it could be the start of a steep downward spiral.
