Welcome to Eifel National Park in Germany, where we'll follow the Wilderness Trail.
This trail covers 85 kilometers over 4 days of hiking, from Monschau-Höfen in the south to Hürtgenwald-Zerkall in the north. You'll experience flowing streams, flower meadows, dense forests, and stunning views. Established in 2004, Eifel National Park allows nature to develop without human interference, offering a unique glimpse into the emerging wilderness. Explore the diverse beauty of the park on this incredible trail.
Day 1: Höfen - Einruhr 24km
On the first day, we started by following a small path down to the river, guided by trail markers with a little wild cat’s head. The path took us through a forest, along a peaceful stream. After a while, the trail became a wider dirt road, which was a bit boring but helped us keep up the pace since we had 24 kilometers to cover.
We found a perfect spot for lunch and enjoyed our picnic. After eating, a short but heavy rain shower surprised us, so we tried to stay under the trees for some cover. Later, the trail became narrower and more challenging, with a small river crossing. We went up and down hills and were rewarded with beautiful views.
We also passed a little cave and chapel along the way. After a long day of hiking, we arrived at the small town of Einruhr where we spent the night.
Day 2: Einruhr - Gemünd 20km
The first 7 kilometers take us along the side of a lake, starting with a climb and then moving closer to the water. We enjoy some great views of the lake, and even spot a small river cruise ship passing by. However, soon after we begin, the rain starts falling, and thunder rumbles in the distance.
At the viewpoint overlooking the river dam, we get a dry moment to enjoy the scenery. But as we start climbing again, the rain returns. Despite the wet weather, we reach the ridge and are rewarded with beautiful views.
For lunch, we found shelter at Vogelsang, a former Belgian military training camp. Under a roof, we enjoy a dry break and our picnic. After lunch, it's back to hiking in the rain, going up and down the trail.
We get another dry spell at a 360-degree viewpoint, offering stunning vistas. But as we approach the town, the rain intensifies, pouring down on us. Soaking wet, we're relieved to finally reach our hotel in Gemünd, happy to dry off and rest, looking forward to tomorrow's hike.
Day 3: Gemünd - Heimbach 23km
On the third day the forecast looks better, and we’re hoping for no rain, though our shoes are still wet from yesterday.
As we start hiking, the sun peeks through the clouds. Leaving the town behind, we follow the river for a while before beginning a climb into the forest alongside a small stream.
We soon reach a charming village, Wolfgarten, with a picnic table surrounded by flowers, which makes for a perfect break spot. After our break, the trail continues on dirt roads, smaller paths, and through more forests, with some open areas offering lovely views.
At lunchtime, we arrive at an abbey, Kloster Mariawald, a perfect place to explore a bit and enjoy our meal. After lunch, we continue into the forest, but miss a turn. Luckily, our detour leads us back to the trail marked with the wild cat’s head.
We pass through some areas of the forest that have been damaged by beetles, leaving behind many dead trees. Despite this, the trail is still beautiful.
Finally, after 23 kilometers, we arrive at the small town of Heimbach, with the castle, Burg Hengebach, on the hill. We’re happy and relieved, enjoying the sunny day we had.
Day 4: Heimbach - Zerkall 18km
On our final day on the Wilderness Trail, the four of us gear up, starting in the rain but hoping for the sun. We begin by walking through the beautiful town of Heimbach.
We climb up and head into the forest, sometimes following a stream. The sun peeks through the clouds now and then, giving us a few nice views, but since we're mostly in the forest, those are limited.
For lunch, we stop at a little shelter that looks like a giant umbrella. We meet up again with the 5 Belgians we've seen on the trail. It's always fun to run into each other.
In the last few kilometers, we walk out of the forest a bit and see cows, butterflies, and even a deer. Then we go down into a partly overgrown trail, really getting that wilderness feel.
Proud of our four days on the trail but also a bit sad that it’s ending, we finally reach our destination
