Did you know that the American Civil war hero Robert Smalls, took control of the Confederate ship that he worked on, The Planter, when the white members of the crew had gone to the harbour, picked up his and other men’s families, disguised himself and the black crew members in uniforms, donning a captain’s uniform himself, sailed the ship through various Confederate ports and delivered it to the Union. He was later hailed as a national hero and went on to become a U.S Congressman for five terms and bought the house in which he grew up a slave as a child.
