Iceland has just been shaken by more than 40 earthquakes in a single day. The strongest, a magnitude 4.0 offshore southwest of Keflavík, was followed quickly by a 3.3 and a 3.0.

On land, swarms hammered Krýsuvík and Lake Kleifarvatn, including twin 2.6 quakes surrounded by dozens of smaller shocks. Inland, tremors were also logged near Goðabunga, Hamarinn, and even close to Hekla.

Scientists confirm the ground near Krýsuvík is deforming faster than in previous cycles, while magma is still building beneath nearby Svartsengi. This is not an isolated swarm. It is a corridor of unrest linking the ocean ridge, the peninsula, and the volcanic highlands.

If magnitudes climb or clusters tighten, the risk of fissures, landslides, and volcanic unrest will rise sharply. Iceland’s crust is unstable across multiple fronts right now.
