(29 Mar 2019) King Abdullah II of Jordan received the Lamp of Peace prize in Assisi on Friday for his efforts for peace in the Middle East, promoting inter-religious harmony, working to protect human rights and providing sanctuary to tens of thousands of refugees in his country.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel presented the prize to King Abdullah II.
Speaking to hundreds of people gathered in the basilica, King Abdullah II remembered the Muslims killed in the terrorist attack in Christchurch New Zealand two weeks ago, noting that "such evil, wherever it happens is our suffering too."
He also spoke out about the city of Jerusalem, insisting that "ties of love and concern bind the Holy City to billions of Muslims and Christians around the world. And Jerusalem should be and must be a unifying city of peace."
This is the third year of the peace prize.  
In 2018, it went to German Chancellor Angela Merkel for her efforts to help migrants arriving in Europe from war-torn Syria and Africa
Former Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos received the prize in 2016 for his efforts to bring peace between the government and Farc rebels.
Following the ceremony, King Abdullah II and Chancellor Angela Merkel took questions from a group of young people.  
In response to a question about the hundreds of thousands of refugees from Syria living in Jordan, the King spoke at length on the efforts made to integrate refugees into their society through work, schools and the healthcare system.
