On September 22nd, 1945, in Bavaria, George Patton walks into a press conference and says a few sentences that will end his wartime career. In front of a row of reporters he talks about denazification as if it were just another political argument, not the main Allied plan for dealing with former Nazis in Germany. The journalists write it down, the story goes out by telegraph, and within days people in Washington are asking whether America’s most aggressive field commander can be trusted with the peace he just helped win. This is the moment Patton stops being just a battlefield hero and becomes a political problem, as his ideas for Germany collide with President Truman’s. In this video, we are going to look at what Patton actually said, why it caused such a reaction, and what it tells us about how the United States learned to deal with its own war heroes once the fighting was over.
