Turn annotations on to know the setting being compared and whether it's on Low, Medium, High, etc! Read the description for more info and help on each setting.

PC specs:

6GB DDR3 RAM
Windows 7 Pro

This time it's The Elder Scrolls being represented.

Ambient Occlusion: Personally, this setting makes a huge difference for me in this particular game, once you see it off, when you turn it back on you can see the lighting feels much more natural.

Water Reflection Quality: I got roughly 10fps of difference between 'Off' and 'High'. I feel that with 'Off' the water just looks seriously outdated - setting it to 'Low' didn't seem to change the frames per second - so I'd suggest having it there just for the reflection effect. It'll look much nicer visually and it won't be heavy on the gpu because on lower settings the water reflects less objects and at a lower resolution.

View Distance: This is one of the big performance options. As you can see, with 0, the scene is much less complex, and the work load for the gpus much smaller when compared with higher values. If you need FPS, this is the first option to look for. Play with values to find a balance between visuals and speed.

Textures: I found that this setting does not affect my fps, as such I'd leave it on in all cases except the most extreme ones. Still, I'd go for 'Medium' in those cases. This setting appears to control all in-game textures.

Sunlight Rays: On my computer, this setting had no impact on the performance when set to 'On'.

Shadows: The other major setting to get some speed out of the engine. It's implemented quite well actually, as you can clearly see the improvements to the scene as the settings go up each notch. Apart from less shadows in lower settings, resolution goes down too, and it's filtered closer and closer as well.

Depth Of Field: I'm not sure whether this setting will tax slower PCs, but on mine this had absolutely no impact at all. DOF is also activated during gameplay if set to 'On'. It's a long distance effect and somewhat subtle, it's nice actually, but so I decided to compare it on conversations only.

Grass: Another setting that had no impact on performance. I feel that today games with no vegetation look pretty lifeless, specially for a game where its looks are more true to real life, so I really don't suggest ever turning it off because it really shouldn't have an impact.

Overall, we've been provided with a rather nice and actually meaningful panel of settings, which features variety, but most of all, actual differences between Lows/Meds/Highs/Ultras which are easy to spot. If you have any questions feel free to leave a comment!
