Red banana plants are not as hardy as green banana plants and will not survive frost or snow so in this gardening video I show you how to protect red banana plants for winter.

I show you the steps I have taken over the last 10 years with the same red banana plant to protect it for the winter months. This gardening video shows you how to care for red banana plants in the UK and in France.

The steps for winter protection of your red banana plants are very simple, just cut away all the leaves before the first signs of frost, this video was filmed 9th October 2022. Once the red banana plant leaves have been removed simply place the red banana in a dark place that will remain above-freezing conditions during the winter months.

I place my red banana plant in our cellar which remains fairly dark throughout the winter months and water the banana plant once a month.

During the winter you will see a single leave growing back from the center of the banana plant and by the spring it will be large once again.

Once the dangers of frost are over, normally mid-May in France I bring the red banana plant back outside into the garden.

Once the red banana plant is returned to the garden and in full sun, I water it every other day and feed it once per week.

Within a few weeks more leaves are growing out from the banana plant and before you know it the red banana plant is back to its former glory.

Red Banana plants make for a wonderful specimen plant within your garden and are really easy to look after during the winter months.
