Welcome to the 6th annual Block Heater, presented by ATB!
From Vancouver, on its most overcast day, comes the moody, atmospheric Parkland Music Project. On their latest album, Eminent Ghosts (2020), Rob Malowany cautiously-hopefully sings of "waiting for just the right night" while swells of pedal and lap steel, flashes of electric guitar and throbbing drums build around him. What sweet relief when the band finally releases the thunderstorm of a chorus. Recorded in just two days with minimal overdubs, this ensemble clearly knows how to create magical, grand, organic moments that allow Malowany's electric voice to shine, like lightning looking for a rod. This is an ambitious, epic sound - realized by some of the heaviest hitters on the Vancouver music scene and meticulously produced by Malowany. This is avant-country jam band territory, where inclement weather is welcomed, not avoided, and if the occasional blinding ray of sunshine pierces through those dark clouds, well, that's what umbrellas are for.
Calgary Folk Fest is located on Treaty 7 land in Moh'kins'tsis, the Blackfoot word meaning “elbow,” or the place we now call Calgary. We recognize the traditional territories and oral practices of the Blackfoot, Stoney Nakoda, the Beaver people of the Tsuut’ina Nation, and the Métis Nation of Alberta, Region Three.
We’d like to give a special thanks to the Michelle O'Reilly Foundation, our funders: Calgary Arts Development, Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Canadian Heritage.
Additional support from CKUA, CJSW, Culture Ireland, Secret Song Festival, and Levis Corner House in West Cork.
