On June 30, 2025, the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office received calls about a vehicle swerving all over the road with children inside. Deputy Blakely located a vehicle matching the description given by callers and followed it until her observed the vehicle fail to maintain a single lane of traffic. Deputy Blakely initiated a traffic stop and made contact with the 40-year-old driver. Inside the vehicle was her teenage daughter, a 5-year-old child, and a 2-year-old infant. The 5-year-old was not secured in a proper child restraint and the 2-year-old was in a car seat, but did not have the shoulder harness on correctly. The driver denied consuming alcohol, but admitted that she had taken a prescription medication that could affect her ability to drive safely. She was asked to perform standardized field sobriety tests, which led to her being arrested for Driving While Under the Influence. She was transported to a local hospital for a blood draw. On the way into the jail, Deputy Blakely read to her the nine (9) charges she would be booked on, which included three (3) felony counts of child abuse. Her case is still open and all suspects are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
