No Contact Orders, Protection Orders, and Restraining Orders are all designed to protect a victim through the power of a judge’s order. The effect is that any violation of the order will be enforced by law enforcement, (potentially) a prosecutor, and the judge. There are very serious consequences for violating court orders, including jail time.

The video will go into more detail about how to differentiate between the three types of orders as well as the need for understanding timelines and service of process. If you want your protection order or restraining order to move beyond the temporary status, make sure you understand the notice rules. If you do not have a civil attorney helping you, ask the court clerks in the county or city where you are seeking the order.

The basics are as follows:

No Contact Order = originates from a criminal case only

Protection Order = civil in nature, there can be a domestic relationship or not and the order will reflect the relationship and the behavior (i.e. Domestic Violence Protection Order, Anti-harassment Order, Stalking Protection Order, Vulnerable Adult Protection Order, etc.)

Restraining Order = originate from domestic/family law cases
