Coming up, one of my favorite interviews with a legendary member of what I believe is the greatest hard rock band ever. He shares the story of the wildest music video of the MTV ERA. That was banned for a bit, but ended up being one of the most iconic of MTV’s history. Its star was a former centerfold, and the whole video was concocted by rock’s craziest frontman, including the iconic spoken word intro that the singer made up on the spot, plus he tells the story of what may be the coolest rock song of the 80s that a famous singer ripped off the year after. I ask today’s legend what he thought about the blatant rip-off, and his comeback is hilarious. You’ll hear stories never heard or told from one of the most famous records in rock history. So let’s do it. The interview is with Professor of Rock.

It’s time for another episode of our series Revelations, where featured artists reveal rare stories about their greatest songs. Today, we have the conclusion of our series on Van Halen with founding member, bassist, and backing vocalist Michael Anthony. Today, we are going to lay bare the records Diver Down and 1984, including the stories behind Jump, Panama, and Hot For Teacher. Speaking of Hot for Teacher, that legendary Drum intro that everyone tried for years to figure out was actually “Double Take So Alex Van Halen recorded two different drum takes—one in each channel— then he layered them together to create that thunderous, chaotic intro. It’s one of the most explosive openers in rock history. and it fit the risqué video perfectly. Michael Anthony tells us the whole story. David Lee Roth concocted the concept, and The Teacher was an actual Playboy Model.
The hot teacher was played by Lillian Müller, a former Playboy Playmate of the Year, giving the video even more controversy. And it was actually EDDIE VAN HALEN’s Favorite song to play live! and the iconic spoken word intro by DLR I brought My Pencil , gimme something to write on… That was made up on the spot by DLR. In fact, Diamond Dave did the same thing on Panama on the part in the middle eight where he says we’re running a little bit hot tonight, except he was drunk when he recorded that. Only Dave. Coming up, Michael Anthony gives us the lowdown on all the classic tracks on 1984, including the Jump video shoot when Dave hurt his butt a lot and how Eddie came up with the amazing guitar parts on their legendary album track Little Guitars. That’s actually my favorite DLR era Van Halen track. How the hell didn’t they put it out as a single? It’s so great. Let’s get into it. Here’s Michael.
